Your career is a game.

Your career is a game. Or a bunch of games put together and played for a very long time.

  1. Chutes and Ladders: You will not only climb up ladders, but there will be chutes that bring you down at times. You may climb up after doing well with a big presentation only to go down a chute when you miss a deliverable. You may climb up continuously in one role only to move onto a different job and feel like you are taking a slide down: as with Chutes and ladder.

2. Clue: You will constantly be thinking about who, what, where, why, and when. When putting together a big presentation: who is the audience, what do they need to know, what is the environment they will be in, why should they care - what's in it for them, and what is going on near that same time to understand potential moods (is it the last presentation after a long day, or over lunch when they may be distracted, etc.)

3. Chess: Your current move is made to set you up for future moves. Your job today should set you up for the next job you want. The conversation you have today is positioning you for the future.
